Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) Test

The Ankle-Brachial Index is a simple and non-invasive test that is used to assess the peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which is a condition where there is a build-up of fatty deposits on the walls of the arteries, particularly in the legs.

Here's how the Ankle-Brachial Index test is typically conducted:

  1. Blood Pressure Measurement: A healthcare provider will measure blood pressure at your ankle and in your arm using a regular blood pressure cuff and a special ultrasound device.
  2. Calculation of ABI: The Ankle-Brachial Index is calculated by dividing the systolic blood pressure at the ankle by the systolic blood pressure in the arm. The result is a ratio.

The normal ABI value is typically between 0.90 and 1.30. A lower ABI may suggest the presence of peripheral arterial disease. Here's a general interpretation:

  • 0.90 to 1.30: Normal
  • 0.70 to 0.90: Mild blockage
  • 0.40 to 0.70: Moderate blockage
  • Less than 0.40: Severe blockage

The test is painless and provides valuable information about the blood flow in the arteries of the legs. It helps in the early detection of peripheral arterial disease, which is important for preventing complications such as leg pain, ulcers, and in severe cases, amputation.

If you're experiencing symptoms like pain or cramping in your legs during physical activity, or if you have risk factors for peripheral arterial disease (such as smoking, diabetes, or a history of cardiovascular disease), your healthcare provider may recommend an Ankle-Brachial Index test.
